The Seattle Open Orchestra (SOO) is an inclusive, community-based ensemble dedicated to exploring experimental, contemporary, and adventurous music-making. Open to musicians of all ages and skill levels—no audition required—SOO provides a welcoming space for people who want to make music together, whether you are returning to your instrument after many years, picking it up for the first time, or seeking new creative challenges.
Modeled after the Philadelphia Community Orchestra, SOO embraces repertoire and practices that extend beyond the traditional orchestral canon. Our programs include experimental and contemporary music from the 20th and 21st centuries, graphic and text-based scores, group improvisation, and rarely heard works from the past. We are especially interested in creating opportunities for musicians to engage with new sounds, new ideas, and new ways of making music together.
For its inaugural season (Spring 2026), rehearsals will be held other Saturday from April 11th, 3:00–5:00 PM at the University of Washington.
The only requirements are that participants bring their own instrument, attend rehearsals regularly, and contribute to a collaborative, open-minded musical environment.
